What is a Half Newel Cap?

A half newel cap sits on a newel post as a decorative finish to your staircase. Newel posts are posts that are usually placed at the top and bottom of a flight of stairs. Newel posts are a structural part of the staircase and are used to support the bannister. Newel caps are completely optional and are not required for the structural benefit of the stairs.

Caps come in a variety of different designs, finishes and materials. Choose between a flat cap, pyramid caps, ball caps, acorn caps and more! We sell these in oak, pine or white painted.

Half Newel Cap Manufacture

Half newel caps are used to finish off the top of your new newel posts. Pyramid caps are an ideal way to finish square or stop-chamfered newels. Although, the caps can be used for a range of decorative purposes.

This is a pyramid style newel cap and is an extremely popular design. Our suppliers make the newel caps from an excellent grade of timber, they then machine them to a quality finish. We supply the caps individually boxed to protect them in transit.

Timbers

The oak caps are made from American white oak and will appear lighter in colour before they are treated. Our lacquered oak caps are fully treated and are ready for fitting. Please note, the images are of unfinished caps, these are finished in a clear lacquer so may be a slightly warmer colour, and also shinier than in the picture.

The pine for the newel caps is sourced from New Zealand. White painted newel caps are made from Poplar and then coated with a white primer.

Sizing

We have designed the caps to fit a half post 45mm x 90mm post and have rebated them to the underside to create a strong fit. They can fit smaller newel posts but there will be a small gap visible to the underside. Typically these caps are acceptable with posts down to 82mm square.

120mm x 58mm x 50mm – Half – These have a recess of 90mm x 45mm (To fit a 90mm x 45mm half newel post)
