Description

Internal Solid Oak Ledged Doors

These beautiful internal solid oak ledged doors are made from carefully selected French oak, and are manufactured in our factory in Sheffield.  This is by far our most popular door and is available to purchase in a variety of options, rustic, select rustic or prime grade oak, two different board profile and in a variety of sizes including custom sizes.

Every door is handmade and checked prior to despatch.  Ledges are glued, pinned and then hydraulically pressed on.  This process makes our door by far the strongest and most durable available in the UK.

As a UK manufacturer, we are also able to offer customised doors, made to your size or with various options, please call for details on 0114 247 4917

Rustic Grade Oak

This is our rustic door designed to mimic the kind of timber that would have been used in doors made by hand centuries ago. We use French Oak, sourced by us from the Southern Normandy, Loire Valley and Bourgogne areas of France.  Rustic oak is ideal for the Older property or where you are recreating the feel of a period made door.  The character in the oak also highlights the solid timber construction of the door, and marks it out as different from the bland oak veneer doors that can be bought elsewhere.

Within the Rustic grade,  planks will contain knots, some of them large rustic knots.  There is usually some knots that are filled where the knot is cracked or large and would otherwise show daylight.  Where possible smaller cracked knots will be left unfilled to add some character.

The grade comparison images show a good representation of what you will receive in a rustic door.  Sometimes the door may need final sanding in specific areas where there are rough patches, or if you prefer you can leave this in their natural state.

Once oiled these doors look superb in a period cottage or barn conversion.  They are a great choice if you are planning on using a darker oil as darker colours tend to blend in many of the large knots this door will have in it.  These doors are very rustic and will not be for everyone so if you would prefer a less characterful door then why not look at our select rustic grade?

Select Rustic Grade Oak

Our most popular timber option is our select rustic grade oak.  This oak is also French Oak, from the same  Southern Normandy, Loire Valley and Bourgogne areas of France, but is one grade higher than normal rustic.

Select rustic oak is also ideal for period properties but reduces the size and number of knots in the door to create a more subtle look.  The doors look great either clear oiled or stained to a darker colour.  In most cases knots will be of a quality that filler will not be needed.  Overall the door will show a much clearer appearance than the full rustic grade but you will still get some character which really highlights the solid oak nature of the door.

These doors are ideal for a clear or light shade of finish to allow the natural beauty of the oak to shine through.

Prime Grade Oak

This door can also be supplied in a prime grade oak.   This is again the same French white oak but bought as the highest commercial grade commonly available.  Prime oak creates a much more subtle appearance and is often used in more modern properties. Prime oak will contain occasional small thumb nail sized knots in some boards while other boards will be clear.   Have a look at the prime grade image to get a feel for how the door will look in this timber grade.

Sizes

These oak ledged doors are manufactured to a standard 40mm thickness.  Customers can choose standard door widths from a 2'0'' (610mm), 2'3'' (686mm)', 2'6'' (762mm)' & 2'9'' (838mm) x a standard height of 6'6" (1981mm).

Finishes

Heritage can pre finish all internal solid oak doors in a clear satin hardwax finish.  We use a quality professional grade product for a long lasting finish.

Accessories

We also offer hardware sets especially designed by us for these doors at fantastic prices.  Each iron mongery set contains 2 x 18"/450mm strap hinges & a thumblatch set with locking pin all in the popular "penny end" design.  We specified an upgraded hinge design with a double barrel to cope with the weight of these doors without sagging, plus the sets are made from a heavy gauge of steel.  Each set is hand made and finished and is supplied with matching screws.  You can choose from either antique beeswax or pewter finish.

Timber Sourcing & Construction Information

The oak we use is specially kiln dried to a 8-10% which makes it perfect for indoor use.  We hold a PEFC licence and we almost solely use oak with full PEFC environmental certification so you can be sure your doors are responsibly made.  We personally visit and check each French sawmills quality and grading processes, and we buy directly with the mill so you not only get the best price but also the best quality timber.

This oak door has vertical planks on one side of the door and on the other side of the door  horizontal ledges are glued and pinned before the door is hydraulically pressed.  This makes for a super stable and strong door, the best on the market we believe.

We only use solid wide boards.  There are imported doors on the market where each vertical board and sometimes the ledges as well are made by gluing together 2 narrower pieces of timber to create each board, which tends to look very poor.  We will never do this with one of our ledged doors as we believe the customer has chosen to buy a quality product.

Please remember, these doors are for internal use only.
